Sights in Split

At the very centre of the city is the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace. Wander around the vast, fortress-like remains and enjoy the many restaurants and bars within the Roman walls. Visit Split Archaeological Museum to learn about the area’s history and be awed by the ancient Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. Other historic sites around the city include Jupiter’s Temple, which is now used as a church, two original sphinxes from Egypt and various remains around Peristil Square. See some beautiful works of local art dating back to the 14th century at the Gallery of Fine Arts and admire striking sculptures by Ivan Meštrović at Galerija Meštrović. Sports fans should stop by Poljud Stadium. If you’re hoping your favourite team will win, go to Grgur Ninski and touch the statue’s toe; it’s said to bring good luck! The campanile bell tower offers terrific views over the city and coast, while those seeking a more nature-based experience can soak up the vistas from atop Marjan Hill. Be sure to also look at St Jeronimus Caves and Church while up there. Thrill seekers can go rock climbing, and the surrounding areas are ideal for hiking. If relaxation is high on your agenda, the sandy beaches of Bene, Bačvice, Kaštelet and Kašjuni won’t disappoint. Watch for people playing the traditional beach ball game of picigin. Another must while in Split is to visit a wine cellar and taste the delicious, world-renowned specialties of the Dalmatian area. There are many big events in Split during the summer, including the Split Music Festival and Summer Theatre Festival.
