In Rhodes you can tour among a treasure chest of mythical structures, hike one of the many mountains, like Attavyros or Mt. Profitis Ilias, rising up from the blue sea or visit inviting small villages. Take a walking tour of the UNESCO-listed Old Town in the city of Rhodes and see sites like the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and the Annunciation Church. History lovers should add the Acropolis of Lindos, the Castle of Monolithos, the ancient ruins of Kamiros and Monastery Tsambika to their travel list. The small church at Asklipio provides interesting insights into ancient healing practices. Some of the island’s best museums include the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, Rhodes Jewish Museum, the Folklore Museum of Lardos Village, Rhodes Toy Museum and the Museum of Modern Greek Art.   • Symi – An island near Rhodes, Symi has a lovely harbour and picturesque architecture. The views on the inbound sailing are beautiful and it’s well worth taking a day trip here if time permits.
  • Kalymnos– A lesser-visited island close to Rhodes, rugged Kalymnos has great opportunities for mountain trekking and rock climbing.
  • Tilos – This small island has several scenic walking trails that lead through agricultural land and past ancient churches. Harkadio Cave is an interesting attraction too.
  • Marmaris – Visit another country with a day trip to lively Marmaris in Turkey. Bathe in a Turkish bath, browse around the markets, bask on the beaches and visit Marmaris Castle.

Shopping in Rhodes

Rhodes’ shopping consists of plentiful stores to cater to tourists. Local products include ceramics, olive oil, umbrellas, embroidery and wine. You’ll find stores selling beachwear, sunglasses, towels, inflatable toys and similar close to most major beaches.

  • Rhodes Old Town – Numerous stores can be found down the maze-like alleys, with antiques, carpets, artwork, jewellery, leather goods and lace items among the products available.
  • Lindos – There are many boutiques selling unique fashions and one-of-a-kind items here.
  • Afandou – This is the place to go if you’re interested in taking home a hand-woven rug.

Food and Drink

  • Honey – There are numerous beehives around the island and the village of Vathi is especially known for its tasty honey.
  • Parrotfish – This brightly coloured fish is a speciality in the Dodecanese islands; try it grilled with seasoning.
  • Matsi – A type of local pasta, which is typically served with tahini sauce and chickpeas.
  • Melekouni – Made from sesame seeds and honey, this hard and brittle candy is popular at celebrations.
  • Pittaroudia – These chickpea fritters are typically seasoned with cumin.
  • Wine – Several vineyards and wineries produce various types of local wine. Athiri and Mandilaria are the two main types of grape grown on the island.

Transport in Rhodes

Rhodes is a fairly large island. If you spend most of your time in one particular tourist area, you will likely be able to walk to most places that you require. Transportation will, however, be required to explore other parts of the island.

  • Buses – The whole island is well served by buses, although you will probably need to change vehicles in Rhodes town if you start your journey elsewhere. Bus tickets are usually reasonably priced, and they can be bought onboard the vehicle.
  • Taxis – There are plentiful taxis in Rhodes and drivers should always operate the meter. Taxis can be hailed on the streets, usually more successful in busier areas, or ordered by telephone. Do note that booking a taxi by phone will incur a small surcharge. If you are heading somewhat off the beaten track, it’s advisable to arrange with a taxi to collect you at an agreed time or pay the driver to wait.
  • Rental Car - Many visitors choose to rent a private vehicle to explore Rhodes. Road conditions are generally good and major places of interest are well signposted.
  • Scooter – Scooters and mopeds offer an alternative to rental cars if there are just one or two people. As well as being cheaper to rent, the smaller vehicles can also reach places that cars cannot. Remember to fill the gas tank regularly as gas stations can be few and far between. Always wear a helmet for safety.
