SIGHTS IN COPENHAGEN

  • The Little Mermaid – Denmark’s national symbol since 1913, the Little Mermaid, from the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, is a 125-centimetre-high bronze statue displayed on a rock by the waterfront.
  • Nyhavn – filled with old houses, high-class restaurants, outdoor cafes and people enjoying themselves, Nyhavn is a great place to visit – especially during the summer.
  • Copenhagen has plenty of museums to choose from, and we recommend the National Museum, where you’ll find a variety of cultural and historical objects, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Art Museum and the Zoological Museum.
  • Tivoli Gardens – with rides for both young and old, a fantastic Christmas market and plenty of other fun activities, this amusement park and pleasure garden, located in the heart of Copenhagen, cannot be missed.
  • For those who want a little more action, a visit to Copenhagen Zoo or Bakken amusement park is highly recommended. Located just outside Copenhagen, Bakken is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks and home to rides, playgrounds and restaurants.
  • Royal splendour can be found at the Amalienborg Castle and the Renaissance-era Kronborg Castle, also immortalised in Hamlet.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO NEAR COPENHAGEN

  • Christiania – the self-governing society of Christiania is a 35-acre area in Copenhagen with beautiful green fields, and is home to artists, hippies and people of an alternative lifestyle. Within walking distance of Copenhagen.
  • Roskilde – about 30 minutes from Copenhagen, known around the world for its annual music festival. In Roskilde you´ll also find the Roskilde Cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum.

SHOPPING IN COPENHAGEN

Anyone who loves shopping will not be disappointed with Copenhagen. The city offers everything from luxurious designer boutiques to well-known discount chains, as well as flea markets and malls. Denmark is known for its design products, and those in search of cutting-edge style will certainly find something to tempt them.

  • Ströget – the largest shopping area in Copenhagen. Over one kilometre long and Europe's longest car-free street, it’s a shopper's paradise. Here the designer brands jostle for space alongside street performers, attractions and cosy eateries. Bargain hunters should continue on to Rådhusplatsen, where the shopping is a little more budget friendly.
  • There is also a good variety of stores to explore – at Magasin du Nord you´ll find everything from clothes and shoes to home decoration and food, and Illum offers a similar selection.
  • You can easily spend an entire day in the Fisketorvet mall, which boasts over 100 shops and restaurants. Another place to check out is Amager Centret – with over 70 shops to choose from you can find almost anything.

You’ll also find stores well stocked with a wide selection of vintage and second-hand products around the city.

DANISH FOOD & DRINKS IN COPENHAGEN

Red hot dogs, beer and sandwiches are just some of the famous Danish delights you must try while in Copenhagen. Copenhagen offers everything from classic Danish dishes to international fine dining. And if you visit the city in August, you should certainly check out the Copenhagen Cooking festival.

  • Smörrebröd – perhaps the most well-known dish in Denmark, consists of rye bread with different toppings.
  • Fläskestek – pork with the rind left on, cooked in the oven for a few hours to give it a crispy finish. Served with potatoes, brown sauce and vegetables
  • Red hot dogs – the classic Danish hot dog with bread, sausage and toppings
  • Frikadeller – meatballs made of minced pork
  • Fried pork with parsley sauce – crispy fried pork, a common dish in the Danish kitchen
  • Wienerbröd – a famous sweet pastry
  • Gammel Dansk – flavoured schnapps drunk on festive occasions
  • Beer – Copenhagen’s pubs offer a huge variety to choose from

TRANSPORT IN COPENHAGEN

  • Metro – modern, quick and smooth. Connects with the urban S-train rail network that serves the city centre and surrounding areas.
  • Bus – buses are regular and a great way to get around the city.
  • Cycling – favourite mode of transport for the locals, who benefit from an extensive cycle-lane network, short distances and flat terrain.
