Vienna is the cosmopolitan centre of Austria, as well as the capital city. But despite a population of close to two million, you will still discover a relaxed atmosphere and this is reflected in its coffee house culture. Residents and visitors alike frequent magnificent and ornate old coffee houses to sample the cakes or read a book and just watch the world go by.

Perched up in the mountains, the town of Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol region of Austria and is the base for all your skiing, snowboarding, hiking and other alpine adventures. The town itself though has a deep cultural heritage and you will discover a host of museums like the Alpine Association Museum and castles such as the Schloss Ambras.

Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and is a cultured city that is draped attractively across the banks of the Salzach River. July and August are great months to visit if you’re a culture lover, because the annual Salzburg Festival features an impressive number of operas, plays and concerts throughout the town.

Typical food and drink in Austria

Your trip to Austria isn’t complete without sampling their famous wiener schnitzel, a breaded escalope of veal, pork, or even chicken that is flattened until really thin and then crumbed and fried for a deliciously light and crunchy treat.
