Island of the Gods, old and new

Steeped in spirituality, this island paradise has long been a magnet for those feeling the need to clear the mind and calm the soul. Earth, sun and sea meet in perfect natural harmony making this island a precious jewel in the crown of the Indonesian archipelago. Serving as the island's arrival point Denpasar is where most visitors will find themselves heading on to their spiritual journey. North to trendy Seminyak or deep into the green heart of Ubud relaxation can be found with ease. Indonesia's own brand of Hinduism, cultivated over centuries, is visible not only in the island's many Pura (temples) but in the daily life of the local population. Being situated in one of the world's richest biodiversity hot-spots makes Bali a mecca for the nature enthusiast – divetrekclimbexplore – it can all be done with any of the many tour operators found in major towns.

The second side of Bali's spirit is one of excitement, adventure and play. Worshippers of a different kind flock to the island to immerse themselves in the hedonistic nightly parties of Kuta, the island's main tourist town, which is served by all the things a visitor needs. For a touch of luxury the resort enclave of Nusa Dua to the south provides better-than-five-star accommodation topped with the world-renowned service and warmth of Balinese hosts. Shopping, especially for handicrafts and local wares, can be done anywhere in or near towns and western brands and malls are now appearing in numbers offering some startlingly good deals. Short trip options abound with the nearby Gili Islands an exceptionally worthwhile choice, where a taste of that deserted-island feeling can be found only a short trip away. The imposing Mount Batur delivers awe-inspiring views after just a sedate two-hour climb. Be careful though, it's an active volcano.

You can reach Bali with Finnair and oneworld alliance members' extensive route network.

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)

The airport is located 13km south of Denpasar town. Taxis and shuttles are easily found and many hotels offer airport transfers. Beware of touts and only agree to take a taxi for a set price.

Always remember to check your airline’s terminal and check-in times.
